HDD Mud Recycling System with Decanter Centrifuge

HDD drilling is short for horizontal directional drilling project, it is widely used for the pipeline work for the oil and gas transporting and etc. Normally, the drilling mud recycled from the HDD machine is to be reserved in a mud pit and the mud cleaning system, which is used to treat the mud to be next time use, treats the drilling mud from the pit and storage the well done mud in the tanks.
Equipment needed for the HDD mud recycling system:
In a traditional HDD mud recycling system, there arenormally 3 phase of separation equipmentincluding shale shaker, desander cones, desilter cones and mud mixing unit for adding new chemicals into the drilling mud, normally 2 jet mixing hoppers and mixing pumps. But now, as the environment demands and the cost pressure for the contractors are becoming more and more important, a lot of HDD contractors are taking decanter centrifuge into consideration in order to get better separation result and lower the mud weight.

GN Solidification Unit Onsite Efficiency Well Proved

In recent couple years, GN Solids Control is keeping study and development the new merchandise so that clients could get any turnkey solution for drilling mud solids control as well as drilling waste management. With the slowly issuing of the new ecological regulations, the drilling workers focus their eye around the final solution of fingertips on the drilling waste.

Bowl – Conveyor Differential RPM and Torque


Differential RPM is the difference between the bowl RPM and the conveyor RPM. The differential is provided by the gearbox which transmits power from the bowl to the conveyor. Differential RPM is simply  calculated by dividing the bowl RPM by the gearbox ratio. Many desanders manufacturers provide a “backdrive” which can independentlyalter the RPM. Backdrive units are, in effect, hydraulic gear reductionsystems used to vary the speed of the conveyor relative to the bowl. Onbackdrive” units RPM depends upon the rotation of the gearbox pinionand the orientation of the flights on the conveyor. For these units RPM may be calculated by:
RPM = (Bowl RPM – Pinion Speed)/Gearbox Ratio

RPM is important because it determines the velocity at which solids areconveyed through a centrifuge. For example, a RPM of 50 and a flight pitchof 3 in. yields a conveyance velocity of 150 in./min. Another expression takes the flight pitch and number of leads on the conveyor into accountto describe the surface area of the bowl swept by the conveyor flightsper unit time. The faster the rate at which the area is swept, the greater the solids capacity.

This equation suggests that solids capacity can be increased by increasingthe RPM (lowering the gearbox ratio). Low swept area values couldindicate potential torque problems. For example, centrifuges with 130:1 orhigher gearbox ratios and centrifuges with 80:1 gearbox ratios with singlelead conveyors may be limited in flowrate by torque.Test data indicates that by increasing RPM reduces torque. Also, torquepressure as feed median particle size increases. Despite the common  beliefthat high RPM values agitate the pond and inhibit sedimentation, testresults indicate that the effect of RPM on solids removal efficiency is slight,provided sufficient differential exists to remove the solids.

Dewatering System for Water Based Drilling Fluids

GN new designed dewatering unit for our client is customized design according to client’s particular project. We ever sold decanter centrifuges to a lot of clients for their dewatering system, but we did not provide the complete system design.
The whole system is devided into 3 parts: Part one solids control or called solids removal, part two dewatering unit, part three storage systems.
Part 1: Solids removal:
Double deck shale shaker GNZS706E-HB and mud cleaner GNZJ703E-3S
This part is to separate the big solids from the drilling fluids and less the solids content, so the fine solids will remain in the drilling fluids and be pumped to the dewatering unit.
Part 2: dewatering unit
This part is to add chemical powder into the drilling fluids for flocculation, then use the cutting machine to cut the big solids into small pieces, then use the screw pump to transfer to GN big bowl decanter centrifuge GNLW553VFD to separate the solids from water. Because water conservation has been a public concerned issue in the world, this dewatering unit has the functions below:
1)       Keep the drilling fluids balance by weight for better performance during drilling
2)       Less tank bottom for easy cleaning
3)       Less the cost for treating the water based drilling fluids
4)       Get more clean water for reuse or conservation
Part 3: storage of clean drilling fluids
These drilling fluids can be reused for drilling by mixing some chemicals.

Decanter Centrifuge is the final stage equipment in a complete solids control system. After being discharged from a desilter or a mud cleaner, drilling mud will be pumped into decanter centrifuge by a screw pump.
